In Search of the Ultimate Coffee Flavoring

Want to tantalize your taste buds with coffee? That's right, I said coffee. You can by trying some of the many types of coffee flavoring available on the market today. You could spice up your cup of java with vanilla, hazel nut or amoretto. To help you make the most of the coffee flavoring, here are some things you should know before buying.

Coffee flavoring sold as syrups are sweet and come in a huge variety of flavors. They are generally added after the coffee is brewed. A general rule with these syrups is, don't overdo it. A little goes a long way. The flavor should complement your coffee not overwhelm it. Here are some basic guidelines you should know before purchasing your coffee flavoring:

Brix- This is the word used to describe the solid contents of the syrup. The higher the concentration of sugar and flavoring in the syrup, the higher the brix. Higher concentration syrups will cost more but will last longer because you use less.

Sugar- Even though the syrup may have a high brix level, you cannot be sure how much is flavoring and how much is sugar. Make sure to check the label or taste test if possible. If you normally take sugar in your coffee, you might find that you do not need to add sugar if the syrup is very sweet. Be wary of thick, sticky syrups. They may be mostly sugar and have a poor flavor extract.

Sweeteners- Most syrups are sweetened with cane sugar. But some manufacturers use fruit juice or corn sugar. Syrups that are flavored with these are not as sweet as the ones flavored with cane sugar.

Preservatives- Some syrups are preservative free but just remember that the shelf life is shorter on preservative free syrups. Check your label to see if it is preservative free.

Uses- Make sure to check your label for uses of your syrup. Most are general purpose syrups but some will be labeled for baking, desserts or drinks.

These flavor syrups are the easiest way to flavor your coffee. But sometimes they can be hard to find. And when you finally do locate them, they are often sold only in large bottles. On the plus size, a larger bottle should last for a longer time. The best place to find the coffee flavoring is where ever gourmet coffee is sold. You will not generally find them in you local supermarket.

There are a variety of flavored coffee beans available on the market. These beans are flavored with essential oils, plant derivatives or other sources of flavorings. One of the advantages of buying flavored coffee beans is the aroma. The smell of the flavoring mixed with the smell of the coffee bean is wonderful and the advantage is that flavored coffee beans are sugar-free. You can add your own sweetener if desired.

Another good and inexpensive way to add coffee flavoring to your coffee is to grind up spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg or orange spices and add it to your coffee grounds before you brew. These spices are gentle and won't permanently stain your coffee maker. It may take takes some experimentation to achieve the amount of flavor that you desire.

So the next time you grab a cup of your favorite coffee, try adding some of your favorite coffee flavoring to it. After all, we all need a little bit of spice in our lives!
